Astana, Kazakhstan, Sept. 9

By Daniar Mukhtarov - Trend:

The 39th World Nuclear Association (WNA) Annual Symposium kicked off in London on Sept. 9, Kazakh state-owned nuclear holding company Kazatomprom said.

Kazatomprom is Kazakhstan's national operator for exporting uranium and its compounds, rare metals, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, special equipment, technologies and double-use materials.

Kazatomprom itself is taking part in the symposium as well.

The meeting, which is attended by the nuclear industry enterprises' heads from over 30 countries, is titled "The global nuclear industry is shaping the future".

During the two days of the symposium, the heads of nuclear companies will discuss energy policy, physical and radiological safety, fuel fabrication, uranium resources and other issues, Kazatomprom said in a message.

Kazatomprom Head Nurlan Kapparov will take part in a panel discussion on the fuel cycle's major threats and opportunities for companies.

He will participate at a separate meeting on the 60th anniversary of creation of nuclear power and the beginning of the industrial uses of atomic energy.

During a separate session, the nuclear industry experts will review the outcomes of the nuclear industry's work over the past years, and mull prospects for developing nuclear technologies.

The symposium is a traditional venue for exchanging views on topical issues and discussing the prospects of cooperation.

It is also planned to hold meetings between the Kazatomprom board chairman and the company's key partners in the field of nuclear fuel cycle.

Kazatomprom has been a WNA member since 1993.

The WNA itself is designed to promote a peaceful use of nuclear energy as a reliable energy source.

It also deals with the issues of nuclear power generation and all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, including mining, conversion, enrichment, fuel fabrication, construction of nuclear power plants, transportation and safe disposal of nuclear fuel.

The WNA organizes the interaction of its members on the technical, commercial, political, and environmental issues, and promotes awareness of the public. The WNA is actively cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The WNA members include the companies, which generate two-thirds of the world's nuclear power. Aside from that, some 90 percent of production, conversion and enrichment of uranium throughout the world account for these companies.

The association's members represent over 30 countries. The WNA Annual Symposium is one of the most important events of the global nuclear industry, which is traditionally attended by about 700 company managers and specialists.
