BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 17. We do not recognize either Taiwan, or Kosovo, or South Ossetia, or Abkhazia. This principle will also be applied to quasi-state structures, which, in our opinion, are Lugansk and Donetsk, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said, Trend reports citing Kazakh media.

Tokayev made the statement, speaking at the 25th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

“I would like to note that the modern international law is the UN Charter. The two main principles laid down in the charter have come into mutual conflict with each other in modern times - this is the territorial integrity of the state and the right of the nation to self-determination,” Tokayev said, answering questions.

The head of state noted that the founding fathers of the UN did not take this moment into account, apparently, and, perhaps, deliberately introduced it as a compromise.

“It has been calculated that if the right of a nation to self-determination is organized throughout the globe, instead of the 193 states that are now members of the UN, more than 500-600 states will appear on earth. It will be chaos. For this reason, we do not recognize either Taiwan, or Kosovo, or South Ossetia, or Abkhazia. Apparently, this principle will also be applied to quasi-state structures, which, in our opinion, are Lugansk and Donetsk. This is a frank answer to your frank question,” Tokayev stressed.
