ASTANA, Kazakhstan, July 1. Kazakhstan plans to increase the share of renewable energy sources in its energy balance to 15 percent by 2030, the country's Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov said during the 12th session of the "Kazakhstan-EU" dialogue platform in Astana, Trend reports.
In his speech, Smailov emphasized the importance of expanding partnerships with the EU. He highlighted that Kazakhstan is actively seeking to utilize all available opportunities for further development of trade, economic, and investment cooperation. The country is particularly focused on transitioning to a green economy and strengthening transportation links.
Furthermore, Smailov underscored the vital role of environmental considerations in Kazakhstan's strategy for sustainable economic development. He emphasized that the country intends to significantly increase the utilization of renewable energy sources in its energy balance, aiming to raise the current 4.5 percent to 15 percent by 2030.
The PM also mentioned a significant milestone in this direction, referring to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding last year, which focuses on the development of value chains for sustainable raw materials, battery technologies, and green hydrogen. Concrete steps have already been taken to solidify partnerships in this sphere, as evidenced by the launch of a major project by Svevind on June 21 for green hydrogen production in the Mangistau region.
In turn, EU Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Kęstutis Jankauskas, highlighted the dynamic development of relations between the EU and Kazakhstan. He emphasized that the implementation of new projects in the field of renewable energy sources and the strengthening of transportation connectivity are key areas for future collaboration.
"Climate change is a global threat. The EU has repeatedly expressed its commitment to achieving a zero-emissions economy by 2050. We would also like to support Kazakhstan in this path through concrete projects from our companies and banks," he said.
