Kyrgyzstan, Russia negotiate prolongation of airbase Kant presence in republic

Kyrgyzstan and Russia hold talks on prolongation of airbase Kant presence on the territory of the republic, press service of the Kyrgyz Defense Ministry reported.

According to its data, RIA Novosti spread information that Russian government has approved the decree, providing for prolongation of Kant airbase presence up to 49 years. "The information should be detailed," Defense Ministry said.

In particular, it was pointed that "negotiations with Russian side over terms of the base presence in the republic were ongoing." Several meetings of experts have already taken place, "24.kg" reported.

Interdepartmental commission for consideration of the airbase presence in Kant and the other issues on improvement of the legal base, regulating operations of Russian military objects on Kyrgyz territory was established in the republic.

"All proposals of both sides will be considered during next meetings of experts," the ministry reported.

At the time, duration of the object's presence is regulated by the Agreement on status and terms of Russian airbase presence on Kyrgyz territory as of September 22, 2003 and limited by 15 years period with possible prolongation for 5 years.
