Inmates at Prison - 1, in the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek have been staging protests during which a bus with riot police entered the prison prior to explosions and gunfire being heard.

There are casualties, agency 24.kg reported.

"There are injured in the cells and blood is everywhere," said the Kyrgyzstan Ombudsman Tursunbek Akun who entered the prison along with a representative of the Human Rights Centre Kylym Shamy.

Prisoners sentenced for life imprisonment in penal colony №3 have supported the uprising by going on hunger strike and setting fire to mattresses," agency 24.k.g. reported quoting the former head of the State Penal Service of Ernst Isayev. The department confirmed the information, but declined to comment.

Mr Isayev said those who refused food in protest of poor prison conditions this morning and lifers in correctional institution #19 in the village of Jana-Jerome are ready to join to the prisoners of the #3 colony.
