Kyrgyz Interior Ministry holds operational meeting on situation in Sokh enclave

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, Shamil Atakhanov held an operational meeting with personnel from the Department of Internal Forces of the Batken region, KirTAG reported on Tuesday with reference to the press service of the Interior Ministry.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, Shamil Atakhanov held an operational meeting with personnel from the Department of Internal Forces of the Batken region, KirTAG reported on Tuesday with reference to the press service of the Interior Ministry.

Reportedly, the meeting was attended by representatives of the National Security Committee and the Border Service of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as Deputy Interior Minister Militia Major General Kashkar Dzhunushuliev.

"During the meeting, issues regarding public order and public safety in the areas bordering the Sokh enclave of the Republic of Uzbekistan were the subject of discussion. Personnel of the Department of Internal Forces of Batken region were given instructions on conducting explanatory work to populations of Batken and Kadamjay regions that surround the enclave of Sokh, the statement says.

The incident took place when a large group of residents from the Uzbek village of Khushyar attacked Kyrgyz frontier guards who were erecting supports for electricity transmission lines in Kyrgyzstan's Batken region on Sunday morning. The villagers tried to seize firearms from the frontier guards, injuring some in the process.

According to Uzbek side, the conflict on Uzbek-Kyrgyz border was provoked by Kyrgyz frontier guards.
