Kyrgyzstan reveals capacity of its commissioned small hydropower plants in 1H2024

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, August 4. Small hydropower plants (HPPs) with a total capacity of 43.06 MW were commissioned in Kyrgyzstan in the first half of 2024, Trend reports.

The issue was discussed during the board meeting of energy companies and enterprises under the Kyrgyz Ministry of Energy on the mentioned period results.

The meeting pointed out that solar power plants with a total capacity of 430 kW are operating in the country.

"The first hydro unit of the Toktogul HPP and the fourth hydro unit of the Uch-Korgon HPP have been handed over for reconstruction, and modernization work is currently underway," a source in the Ministry of Energy said, mentioning that the ministry is actively preparing for the construction of the Kambarata HPP-1.

During the meeting, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Bakyt Torobaev explained that preparations for the autumn-winter period are underway.

"The emergency situation should not repeat as it did last year. Check the Bishkek TPP, Osh TPP, substations, overhead power lines, and all energy equipment, and thoroughly prepare for the upcoming autumn-winter period. This year, it is necessary to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity and heat to the population," Torobaev emphasized.

The meeting also pointed out that the construction of the 456-kilometer 500 kV transmission line under the CASA-1000 (Central Asia-South Asia) project is in full swing, a floating solar power station at the reservoir of TPP-5 of Chakan HPP JSC has been commissioned, and the construction of the Kara-Kul HPP continues.

To note, electricity production at small HPPs in Kyrgyzstan grew by 7.7 percent to 191 million kWh in 2023.
