On its working visit to Dushanbe, a team of the Eurasian Development Bank (EADB) led by Board Deputy Chairman Kambar Shalgimbayev held talks with Prime Minister of Tajikistan Akil Akilov, the EADB reported on Tuesday.

"At the talks, the sides examined directions and prospects of EADB investment activity in the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan, including the use of the EAEC Anti-Crisis Fund (ACF). The sides focused at the opportunity of using EADB and ACF money for the implementation of investment project entitled "Rehabilitation of the Nurek Hydro Power Plant," the report said.

The Nurek hydro power plant, which provides more than three quarters of Tajikistan's demand in power, needs to be refurbished urgently on the basis of modernization of its main and auxiliary equipment using up-to-date technologies.

The plant's equipment that needs to be refurbished includes electrical and hydro-mechanical equipment, and control, automation and diagnostics systems. The 3,000-megawatt hydro power plant was put into operation in 1972 with its last aggregate in operation since 1979.

In this connection, in 2010 the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan considered this project a priority in the energy industry for 2010-2015. The project is valued at around $300 million.

One of the examined variants of the project's financing envisioned borrowing of an investment loan from the ACF to cover the manufacture of the main and auxiliary equipment at enterprises of EAEC member states.
