Trend:

Uzbek government has approved the opening of a number of checkpoints on the border with Tajikistan, TajikTA agency reported.

The government approved the resumption of operations of a number of checkpoints on the border with Tajikistan in a decree dated Feb. 21, 2018.

It is planned to create roadside infrastructure that meets modern standards, as well as the necessary social and living conditions for citizens along the roads adjacent to the checkpoints.

Uzbekistan Railways JSC was instructed to reconstruct the Galaba-Khoshadi railway section in Uzbekistan by March 1 and to create the necessary servicing and living conditions for the state control bodies at checkpoints.

Previously, various disagreements arose between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, including on the demarcation of the state border. However, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has started to reset the relations with the country’s neighbors in the region, in particular, with Tajikistan.

The parties resumed the dialogue on border, water and energy issues, launched air communication between the capitals, and intend to abolish the visa regime.

The Uzbek president is expected to pay a state visit to Tajikistan in the first decade of March 2018.
