BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 28. Tajikistan significantly increased the imports of electric cars from January through December 2022, Trend reports with reference to Tajik media.

In the reporting period, the country imported 767 electric cars, which is an increase of more than 16 times or 720 cars, compared to 47 cars in 2021.

According to the information, one of the reasons for the growth in imports of electric cars in the country is the implementation of the Development of Electric Transport in Tajikistan for 2023-2027 Program.

One of the objectives of the program is to switch to electric transport and assist in the prevention of climate change.

“In order to adapt the national economy to the global climate change, protect the environment and improve the ecological situation of the country, it is necessary to completely free the imports of electric vehicles, electric buses, trolleybuses from tax and customs payments,” Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon said during his speech in 2021.

Changes and additions to the tax code will enable to exemption of the import of electric vehicles from customs duty, as well as from value-added tax and excise duty, for a period of 10 years.

At the same time, in the frame of the Green City Project implemented in Tajikistan’s Dushanbe, the city has bought 104 of a wireless trolley bus, some electric buses and one contactless electric trolley bus in the past few years.

Tajikistan’s capital joined the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Green Cities program in 2019, with the goal to establish a more ecologically friendly environment in the city.
