Tajikistan urges to speed up process in getting EU's system of preferences

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 3. President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon emphasized the need to speed up Tajikistan's accession process to the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) of the European Union (EU) during his meeting with President of the European Council, Charles Michel, Trend reports.

According to Rahmon, such a move would deepen the trade and economic collaboration between Tajikistan and the EU.

The meeting between two presidents took place within the frame of Central Asia – Europe summit which was held in Kyrgyzstan’s Cholpon-Ata town with the participation of the presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, and President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

During the meeting, Rahmon and Michel engaged in discussions about the current state and future prospects of cooperation between Tajikistan and the EU, with a focus on attracting European investments and providing technical and financial assistance to Tajikistan in implementing projects and programs for the country's socio-economic development.

The presidents also discussed issues related to countering security challenges and threats, with a focus on the situation in Afghanistan.

The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) is a program that grants preferential market access to the European Union for products originating from developing countries. This arrangement provides favorable treatment by offering reduced or zero rates of customs duties.
