DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, August 16. The total volume of Tajikistan's national debt reached $3.6 billion as of July 1, 2023, the Minister of Finance of Tajikistan, Faiziddin Kahhorzoda, said, Trend reports.

According to him, this equates to 31.1 percent of the country's GDP. Specifically, he noted that the external debt amounted to $3.2 billion, while the internal debt stood at $400 million.

The Minister believes that the national debt level is at a relatively comfortable level. He emphasized that, according to the public borrowing management strategy, the critical debt-to-GDP ratio is considered to be 60 percent.

According to the Minister's statement, the country's national debt decreased by around $100 million in the first half of this year, primarily due to a reduction in internal debt.

Regarding changes in the external debt, he mentioned that these will occur next year when they begin signing credit agreements for the Rogun Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) project.

Earlier, it was announced that the Government of Tajikistan is set to initiate direct negotiations with potential investors to secure additional financing for the completion of the Rogun HPP by the end of this year.
