DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, October 7. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) anticipates that Tajikistan's wheat production in 2023 will reach 1.050 million tons, which is 25 percent higher than in 2022, Trend reports.

It is also projected that barley production will reach 169,000 tons, which is 12.7 percent higher than the previous year. On the other hand, maize production is expected to decrease by 52.7 percent in 2023 compared to 2022, with an estimated output of 104,000 tons.

Other cereal production is set to reach 136,000 tons, indicating a 7.8 percent increase compared to 2022.

In total, Tajikistan's cereal production is expected to reach 1.459 million tons in 2023, reflecting a 9.2 percent increase compared to 2021. FAO notes that wheat, maize, and barley production are estimated to be above the average levels observed during the period from 2018 to 2022.

The favorable crop conditions in 2023 were attributed to beneficial rainfall, improved irrigation, and lower prices for farming inputs like fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, and fuel. Furthermore, the unusually low temperatures in 2022 and 2023 had a positive impact on field crops by reducing pest population.
