DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, October 22. The World Food Programme (WFP) provided assistance to 530,313 people in Tajikistan in September 2023, Trend reports.

This assistance was distributed in a nearly equal split, with 51 percent going to men and 49 percent to women. In total, 2,089 tons of food were distributed, and cash-based transfers amounting to $21,793 were made.

In September, the Tajikistan government officially opened two bridges over the Yaghnob river, which were constructed with WFP support. Furthermore, by September, 70 kilometers of irrigation canals in the country had been rehabilitated with support from the WFP and funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

In response to the escalating food insecurity, WFP distributed approximately 1,500 tons of food commodities to over 74,000 vulnerable individuals in the country as part of an emergency program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as of September.

WFP has been actively involved in Tajikistan since 1993 and is currently operating under the Country Strategic Plan (2023-2026), initiated in January 2023.

This strategic plan sets specific goals for the upcoming years, aiming to enhance the livelihoods, resilience, and adaptive capacities of food-insecure and vulnerable populations in both urban and rural areas through the improvement of climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agricultural and food value chains by 2026.
