DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, December 28. Tajikistan has agreed to supply electricity to Afghanistan in 2024, Trend reports.

The corresponding agreement was signed in Türkiye by the Chief Executive Officer of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) national electricity company, Alhaj Mullah Muhammad Hanif Hamza, and the Chairman of Tajikistan's Barki Tojik national electricity company, Mohammad Omar Asazada.

During the meeting, the possibility of extending a new 500 kV power transmission line from Tajikistan to Afghanistan was discussed. Tajikistan expressed interest in extending this transmission.

Additionally, DABS's leadership has reached out to Tajikistan seeking collaboration for the revival, coordination, and implementation of the CASA-1000 project.

CASA-1000 is an infrastructure initiative designed to transmit 1,300 megawatts of surplus electricity from Central Asian countries, specifically Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, to meet the high electricity demands in South Asian countries, namely Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The project involves modernizing the electrical grids in these participating countries by constructing new substations and high-voltage power transmission lines. It was first approved in March 2014.

According to the statistical agency under the president of Tajikistan, the country has increased its electricity exports to Afghanistan. In November of this year alone, Tajikistan exported over $1.9 million worth of electricity to its neighboring country, which is a 46-percent increase compared to the previous month.

Overall, Tajikistan exported electricity abroad, totaling over $107.7 million from January through November 2023. This figure is nearly 5 percent higher than the same period in 2022.
