DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, December 29. During Tajikistan's period of independence (established in 1991), the government has allocated 85.7 billion somoni ($7.8 billion) for the repair and reconstruction of the country's energy system, Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon said in his address to the country's Supreme Assembly, Trend reports.
The president highlighted that the system, in which the majority of equipment has nearly reached its 75-year service life, has been renovated and reconstructed.
"Over 11.3 billion somoni ($1 billion) was spent alone on the reconstruction of existing hydroelectric power plants during this time period. The Sarband hydroelectric power facility has been completely rebuilt, with a capacity increase of 30 megawatts. In addition, the Nurek and Kayrakkum hydroelectric power stations are being rebuilt. Their aggregate capacity will grow by 423 megawatts once completed," Rahmon said.
He emphasized that an important aspect is that these mentioned hydroelectric power stations will serve the citizens of Tajikistan for several more decades after reconstruction.
The Tajik president pointed out that, considering the abundance of hydroenergy resources and the considerable potential for producing "green" energy and its export, the country's government is taking sustainable steps towards achieving its strategic goal of energy independence.
"In 2023, Tajikistan's energy capacity reached over 6,000 megawatts, with a total electricity production of 22 billion kilowatt-hours. This is 4.8 billion kilowatt-hours more than in 2017, which is an increase of 28 percent," Rahmon noted.
