Tajikistan builds vast energy infrastructure since gaining independence

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, May 31. Tajikistan has built and reconstructed 287 small and large hydropower plants, 1,500 kilometers of high-voltage power lines, and 50 high-voltage substations since gaining independence in 1991, Trend reports.

The president of the country, Emomali Rahmon, disclosed this information during a meeting with the country's science and education leaders, according to the presidential press service.

He pointed out that these efforts have resulted in the reconstruction of 75 percent of the country's energy infrastructure. Notable projects include the construction and commissioning of the Sangtuda-1, Sangtuda-2, Pamir-1, Tajikistan hydropower plants, and a thermal power plant in Dushanbe. Additionally, the Sarband hydropower plant has been fully reconstructed.

Meanwhile, ongoing projects include the reconstruction and complete restoration of the Nurek and Kairakkum hydropower plants and the continuous construction of the Sebzor hydropower plant.

Over this period, more than 2,000 megawatts of additional energy capacity have been commissioned. Electricity production increased from 17.6 billion kilowatt-hours in 1991 to 21.860 billion kilowatt-hours in 2023, marking a 24.2 percent increase.
