DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, October 2. The need for a metro system in Dushanbe is driven by the city's increasing population, Tajikistan's Minister of Transport, Azim Ibrohim, said during a seminar marking the official launch of the project's technical and economic feasibility study, Trend reports.
He emphasized that providing residents with modern, eco-friendly public transport is a key issue under constant government oversight.
Ibrohim noted that the metro construction is part of Dushanbe's master plan, citing that the city's population has tripled in the last 30 years, while the overall population of Tajikistan has more than doubled. The minister underscored that building a metro is essential for reducing traffic congestion and ensuring smoother transit in the capital.
He expressed the ministry's readiness to strengthen cooperation with South Korea on this initiative, aiming for a phased implementation.
A memorandum of understanding was signed on March 4, 2022, between Tajikistan's Ministry of Transport and the Korea National Railway to explore the feasibility of urban rail and light rail systems in Dushanbe.
The project has been analyzed, including potential routes and traffic dynamics, with funding from the Korean Export-Import Bank.
Preliminary feasibility studies will be supported financially by the Korea National Railway, with plans for further collaboration to attract foreign investment.
