Turkmenistan considers unacceptable uncoordinated change of water and energy balance in region: media

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov stated "inadmissibility of unilaterally adopting any unsolicited actions to change the already existing water and energy balance, the Altyn Asyr national television reported.

Projects of all hydraulic works, built on the transboundary rivers, must pass an independent international techno-economic and environmental assessment. Berdymuhamedov unveiled his proposal at a regional summit in Almaty, on the Aral Sea.

Ashgabat invited to establish an ad hoc expert group, in cooperation with the UN and its agencies, including the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia, as well as other international organizations involved in water and hydropower resources, to formulate a comprehensive international legal instrument to save Aral Sea.

Berdymuhamedov made public country's offer to develop an investment plan for a unified energy system of Central Asia, with financial and technical resources from international organizations under the auspices and with the participation of the UN.

Berdymuhamedov noted that over the past two years Turkmenistan has invested $170 million in projects aimed at improving the environmental situation in the Aral Sea adjacent to the territory and, in particular, in Dashoguz province.In accordance with the priorities of Turkmenistan's state policy, programs are based on social protection of population, environmental, health welfare, development of infrastructure and, above all, water supply systems.
