Turkmenistan accuses "Gazprom" of distorting country's gas reserves

Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov.19 / Trend /

Turkmen Foreign Ministry disseminated information that the Russian JSC "Gazprom" distorts data on Turkmenistan's natural resource potential.

"TV channel "Rossia" broadcasted an interview with the Deputy Chairman of JSC

"Gazprom" Alexander Medvedev, who actually questioned official reports on natural gas reserves in Turkmenistan," Turkmen Embassy in Azerbaijan said.

Turkmen Foreign Ministry said that such statement made by "Gazprom" representative is "extremely wrong and disrespectful towards partners of cooperation in the energy sector."

"The fact that such a biased assessment is voiced by a professional causes particular confusion," the report says.

In this regard, the Turkmen side stresses that the representatives of the international company "Gaffney, Cline & Associates" (UK) presented the results of the second phase of independent audit of reserves of Turkmenistan's major gas fields - South Yoloten-Osman, Minara, Yashlar in Ashgabat on Oct. 11, 2011.

According to the audit results, geological reserves of zone of the above-mentioned gas fields are confirmed at the maximum volume of 26,200 trillion cubic meters of gas, which makes it second in the world. At the same time, "Gaffney, Cline & Associates" representatives stressed that the data may change in the direction of their increase, as at present the north-west, south-eastern and western borders of the unique Turkmen field Southern Yoloten- Osman are not yet determined.

Due to opening of supergiant zone of gas fields in the territory of Turkmenistan and in order to unite fields Southern Yoloten-Osman, Minara and adjacent fields in a unified system these fields will be named "Galkynysh" gas field in accordance with the Turkmen president's decree dated Nov.18, 2011.

"Based on the above-stated, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry considers public statements by Mr Medvedev as another clumsy attempt to distort the real situation concerning the natural resource potential of Turkmenistan, in particular, its gas reserves. It happens amid frequent Russian media report attacks on Turkmenistan's independent energy policy," Foreign Ministry said in its report.

In this context the Turkmen side stresses that the country based on its national interests will further cooperate with all interested parties in the energy sphere on the principles of mutual respect, equal partnership and diversification of routes for its energy resources entry to the world markets.
