The presidential elections held in Turkmenistan demonstrated great openness, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev, who headed the CIS observation mission, said at the
press conference in Ashgabat.
He said that the Turkmen electoral legislation and the elections corresponded to the generally accepted democratic norms.
According to the Turkmen Central Election Commission (CEC) on Monday, incumbent president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was re-elected for the second term.
About 3 million voters were included in the lists of participation in the elections.
Eight candidates took part in the current presidential campaign but President Berdimuhamedov gained 97.14 per cent of votes.
Stressing the high level of the elections, the CIS observation mission will assess the elections in Ashgabat today.
The CIS mission includes 63 observers, representing Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia, the CIS Executive Committee.
The mission stressed that a high level of organization and coherence in the work
of election commissions was ensured at all stages of preparations for the elections.
The CIS observation mission will make its final conclusions in the final document in the near future.
