Turkmenistan has begun nominating candidates to local self-government bodies - People's Councils and Gengeshi instead of representatives who have left these bodies, the country's Central Election Commission said on Thursday.

Turkmenistan has begun nominating candidates to local self-government bodies - People's Councils and Gengeshi instead of representatives who have left these bodies, the country's Central Election Commission said on Thursday.

Special elections are scheduled for April 14.

In total it is planned to elect 69 Gengeshi members and 59 members of regional, district and town People's Councils.

Some 128 electoral districts have been created for the election of gengeshi members in cities, towns, gengeshliks, and members of the above-mentioned people's councils.

Nine electoral districts were created in the Akhal region, 20 in the Balkan, 22 in Dashoguz and Lebap each, 50 in Mary and five in Ashgabat.

Some 278 polling stations were created in districts, district election commissions of the cities were formed in the districts, towns and gengeshliks.

Campaigning will be launched following completion of candidate registration.

"All candidates are given equal rights and opportunities in order to provide the electorate their proposals relating to the implementation of large-scale development programs," the CEC report said.
