Turkmen parliament begins consideration of new draft laws

Majlis (parliament) of Turkmenistan will hold a regular meeting of the IV convocation on May 4, during which it will consider a number of legislative documents intended to strengthen the legal framework, the progressive development of the economy and society, the Turkmen government said.

According to the report, the Majlis Chairman Akja Nurberdiyeva recently informed the government about the current legislative activities of the parliament.

"It was noted that the work on the legislative consolidation of progressive reforms and changes in Turkmenistan is underway given advanced international practice and with the active participation of relevant ministries and departments of the country," the report says.

The term of office of deputies of the Majlis shall be five years.

According to the Turkmen constitution, parliament passes laws, makes changes and additions to the Constitution of Turkmenistan; examines the state budget approval and addresses questions on holding referendums.

It also announces presidential and parliamentary elections, considers issues on appointment and dismissal of the chief of Supreme Court, attorney general, interior minister and minister of justice. It also ratifies and terminates international treaties and addresses issues on change of state borders and the administrative and territorial division of Turkmenistan.
