Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Feb. 6
By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend:
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov's official visit to Ukraine this year is being prepared, the Ukrainian foreign ministry reported on Feb. 6.
This issue was discussed in Ashgabat during a meeting between the Turkmen president and Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Viktor Maiko, according to the information.
"The sides have discussed a wide range of bilateral issues," the Ukrainian foreign ministry reported. "Special attention is being paid to the preparation of the Turkmen president's official visit to Ukraine."
The meeting was held as part of the Ukrainian- Turkmen political consultations.
Maiko conveyed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's greetings to his Turkmen counterpart, Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary reported.
"The Turkmen president conveyed the greetings to his Ukrainian counterpart, stressing that Ukraine remains an important partner for Turkmenistan.
In January, Ukrainian media reported that Ukraine hopes for the resumption of direct gas supplies from Turkmenistan after an agreement over the CIS pipeline to be signed in May 2014.
Kiev hopes that an agreement on a CIS free trade zone will fully work and an item on the fuel pipe system of those countries will be taken into account.
This agreement was ratified by Ukraine and Russia. However the Russian side postponed approving an item on Kiev's opportunity to directly order gas supplies from Turkmenistan.
Turkmen gas has not been supplied to Ukraine under direct contract since early 2006.
President Yanukovych stressed after the talks in Ashgabat a year ago that the two countries have every opportunity to combine the efforts to consider the alternative routes of gas supplies for own needs and for export to Europe.
Naftogaz of Ukraine National Joint Stock Company and Turkmengaz company signed a memorandum of Turkmen gas supplies to Ukraine in 2013.
