The Chairman of the Turkmen Parliament (Majlis) Akja Nurberdyeva received a letter of credence from Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Qatar Hamad Ali Al Sulayti, the Turkmen Altyn Asr TV channel reported on March 4.

"Exchange of views was held on the existing potential of bilateral partnership. The parties called for an intensification of interstate relations, particularly the cultural dialogue, contributing to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding between the two peoples," the statement said.

Diplomat was also familiarized with the ongoing large-scale socio-economic projects in Turkmenistan.

Impetus was given to bilateral relations during the official visit of the Turkmen President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Doha in 2010 and his meeting with the Qatar`s Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

It was reported earlier that, as being one of the major world manufactures and exports of natural gas, Turkmenistan and Qatar, are aiming to develop constructive cooperation in this field. The two states are also studying the possibilities of cooperation in the sphere of trade, construction, transport, textile industry.

A notable event was the signature of the agreement on the establishment of international transport and transit corridor between the governments of Iran, Oman, Qatar, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in Ashgabat on April 25, 2011. This corridor will allow the Central Asian countries the most optimal route to connect with the ports of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, to expand regional ties with the growth of the common trade, and reduce the cost of goods transit.
