Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has instructed the parliament to review the current legislation by toughening the punishment for bribery and corruption, the Turkmen Dovlet Habarlary state news agency reported.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has instructed the parliament to review the current legislation by toughening the punishment for bribery and corruption, the Turkmen Dovlet Habarlary state news agency reported.

"As you know, people convicted of corruption and bribery are not pardoned,” the president said. “No one is allowed to plunder the people's money. If necessary, we will increase the staff of the State Service for Combating Economic Crimes."

During the parliamentary meeting, director of the State Service for Combating Economic Crimes Mammetkhan Chakyev delivered a report.

The cases of abuse of powers by certain officials, facts of bribery and corruption were revealed during the inspections in the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Population, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, the enterprises under the Ministry of Railway Transport, Turkmen Oil State Concern, the Turkmenbashi complex of oil refineries and the State Committee for Fisheries.

"Corruption restrains economic development and creates serious obstacles to the development of the country," the president said.

“In the future, the most severe measures will be taken against public servants, who take bribes,” the president said. “People, involved in corruption and bribery, will be punished according to the law.”
