Turkmenistan eyes to reduce methane emissions - deputy PM

Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Berdimuhamedov, during his speech at the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP26) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Glasgow, said that Turkmenistan pays special attention to reducing methane emissions, the Turkmen foreign ministry said, Trend reports.

While speaking at COP26, the deputy prime minister stressed that after the adoption of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Turkmenistan is actively working to achieve them domestically and internationally.

So, to achieve the goals on the climate agenda, the country at the national level pays special attention to reducing methane emissions.

“In this regard, we welcome the new initiative on the Global Methane Commitment and express our interest in exploring it in detail to participate there,” Berdimuhamedov said.

The deputy prime minister also spoke about Turkmenistan's ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in key sectors of the economy.

“The volume of greenhouse gas emissions is reduced due to the modern technologies which are used in all spheres of the economy,” Berdimuhamedov said.

Moreover, the deputy prime minister stressed that the country is improving the national legal framework and making a big contribution to achieving climate neutrality.

“The National Climate Change Strategy, the National Strategy for the Development of Renewable Energy until 2030 and the new Law of Turkmenistan "On Renewable Energy Sources" were adopted,” Berdimuhamedov said.

In this regard, the deputy prime minister stressed that Turkmenistan, both through its own funds and the technical, financial support of international organizations and financial institutions, plans to achieve zero growth in greenhouse gas emissions in the medium term, starting from 2030, and the annual big reduction in emissions in the long term, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said.

COP26 started on November 1 in Glasgow and will run for two weeks. The heads of state and members of government from over 120 countries are participating there.
