BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 15. The development of cooperation in the field of energy is one of the important aspects of cooperation between the EU and Turkmenistan, the European Commission’s Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Peter Stano told Trend.

According to him, new potential areas of cooperation between the EU and Turkmenistan include reducing methane emissions, developing renewable energy, and tapping into the potential of renewable hydrogen.

"We welcome that Turkmenistan joined the Global Methane Pledge promoted by the EU on December 2, 2023, on the occasion of the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 in Dubai. The fossil energy sector has the largest, fastest, and cheapest methane reduction potential across sectors and is a key enabler to achieve the Global Methane Pledge," he said.

He noted that the EU also looks forward to progress in Turkmenistan in the preparation of methane and hydrogen roadmaps and the development of concrete projects.

Referring to the issue of EU measures to ensure sustainability and diversity in the development of relations with Central Asia, especially in the context of changing geopolitical conditions, Peter Stano added that the EU seeks to contribute to the sustainable economic development of the entire Central Asian region, where one of the most important aspects is the development of trans-regional relations.
