Turkmenistan expands electricity supply network to Afghanistan

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, March 6. Turkmenistan is actively promoting and expanding electricity supplies to Afghanistan, taking consistent steps to increase the volume and variety of routes, Trend reports.

This was announced by the Head of Turkmen Energy Ministry’s International Electricity Projects Department in the TAP direction Myrat Artykov, at the Turkmen-Afghan Business Forum in Ashgabat city.

According to him, electricity is currently being sent from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan via the routes Kerki - Andkhoy, Serkhetabat - Herat, Serkhetabat - Torghundi, Rabatkashan - Kalainau and Zelili - Akina.

Artykov noted that since the establishment of cooperation in this area between the two countries, the volume of Turkmen electricity sent to this country has been growing every year.

Meanwhile, in January 2021, the Kerki power plant with a capacity of 500 kW and the Kerki - Andkhoy - Shibergan - Mazar-e-Sharif power transmission line were put into operation.

To implement this project, the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan built a 500 kW power plant in the city of Kerki, a 388-kilometer transmission line from the Mary HPP to the city of Kerki, as well as 500 kW power transmission lines from Kerki with a length of 62 km to the Turkmen - Afghan border.

At the same time, according to the purchase and sale agreement between Turkmenistan's Turkmenenergo State Electric Power Corporation and Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), 220 kW of electric power is currently being transferred in this direction.
