Uzbek president awards WHO Director General

Uzbek President Islam Karimov has signed a decree awarding Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Chan high award - "For the Healthy Generation" (Soglom Avlod Uchun).
"For outstanding merits in organizing the WHO activity in the sphere of health and development of primary public health care, the implementation of the Global Strategy for Women's and Children's Health the WHO Director General Margaret Chan is awarded the Order "Soglom Avlod Uchun" of the first degree," the decree says.
Margaret Chan has arrived in Tashkent to attend an international symposium on the topic "National model of maternal and child health protection in Uzbekistan: Healthy mother - healthy child".
Order "Soglom Avlod Uchun" was instituted in 1993 and is the first order instituted in the country.
Uzbek President Islam Karimov received Margaret Chan at the Oqsaroy residence on Saturday.
Uzbek president said her visit to the country is an evidence of the tremendous interest of the international community, especially the WHO, to changes in the healthcare system of Uzbekistan.
He stressed that Uzbekistan attaches great importance to relations with the WHO.
Margaret Chan stressed that the WHO since 1991 has seen a high level of political responsibility in Uzbekistan in the area of protection of motherhood and childhood. The "Healthy mother - healthy child" program carried out in Uzbekistan covers all essential elements of good care for mothers and children, including primary healthcare and hospital care, regular routine inspections and emergency medical care, disease prevention through immunization and early diagnosis through screening, she stressed.
The sides exchanged views on prospects of cooperation between Uzbekistan and WHO.
