Education costs ups at Uzbek universities

The cost of education in Uzbek higher educational institutions in the new academic year will rise by an average of 10 per cent.

The new tuition fee in higher education on a fee-based contract has been approved by the Ministry of Finance together with the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education, as well as departments and agencies. It will take effect from September 1.

For example, a contract for full-time undergraduate education in 'Teacher training and pedagogical subjects, as well as vocational education', increased from 3.3 million to 3.65 million soums each year.

A similar increase affected Liberal arts, Natural sciences, Mathematics and statistics, Practical mathematics and computer science, Social discipline and ethics, Engineering, manufacturing and processing industries, Agriculture and water management, Social security , Sporting activities, Environmental protection and Safety of human activities.

Education in Eastern philology, philology Turkic languages, Roman and German Philology, Journalism and Information, "T and information security, Construction, Scope of Services, Transport will rise from 3.6 million soums up to 3.95 million soums per year.

The contract for education in Arts and Architecture will cost 4.25 million soums instead of 3.85 million soums, Economics and Business, Health - 4.75 million soums instead of 4.3 million soums, International relations, World Economy and International Economic Relations and Law 5.3 million soums instead of 4.8 million soums.

The cheapest contract for getting a master's degree, as well as the second specialty, increased from 3.58 million to 3.96 million soums and the most expensive contract from 5.28 million soums to 5.83 million soums.

According to the presidential decree, salaries of employees of budgetary institutions and organisations, pensions and social allowances and scholarships will be increased by an average of 1.15 times in Uzbekistan from August 1.

About 62,900 students will be admitted in universities in the new academic year, including undergraduates 56,607 students and 6300 masters.

About 19,340 undergraduate students (34 percent) will study via state grants in the new academic year, 37,267 (66 percent) on a fee-based contract.

The quota for education via state grants in the magistracy remained at the previous level - 1,566 (25 percent), 4,734 (75 percent) will study on a fee-contract basis.

There are 58 universities in Uzbekistan, 28 - in Tashkent, 6 - in Samarkand, 4 - in Andijan, three high universities - in Bukhara, Namangan, two - in Ferghana, Jizzakh, Nukus and Karshi, one - in Termez, Urgench, Navoi, and Kokand.

The official exchange rate is 1.900.62 soums per $1.
