The Muruntau field in the Navoi region of Uzbekistan took the first place in the ranking of the world's biggest gold mines by production in 2020, Trend reports referring to Kitco analytical center.
According to Kitco, last year about two million ounces of gold (56.7 tons) were produced at the Muruntau field.
"With a stunning resource base of more than 150 million ounces, Muruntau is likely to retain its title as the largest gold mine in the world in the near future," analysts say.
The Muruntau field was discovered in 1958. It is noted that the industrial gold mining began here in 1969. The mining complex is located in Uzbekistan and consists of open-pit mine. Operated by state-owned Navoi company, the mine is more than 3.3 kilometers long, 2.5 kilometers wide nearly 600 meters deep.
Earlier it was reported that gold is the main export item of Uzbekistan. It is noted that its share in 2020 accounted for 44 percent of Uzbek exports, while in 2019 it accounted for 35 percent.
