BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 21

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Uzbekistan will increase water distribution from 80 to 90 cubic meters per second for farmers of Maktaaral and Zhetisay districts of Turkestan region of Kazakhstan through the Dostyk interstate canal, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan.

The agreement was reached during discussions between the Minister of Water Resources of Uzbekistan Shavkat Khamraev met with the Minister of Ecology, Geology, and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Magzum Mirzagaliyev about joint measures to improve the water situation in the middle and lower reaches of the Syrdarya River.

Thus, as a result of these measures during the summer growing season, farmers in Kazakhstan will not experience a water shortage when irrigating their lands.

Also, agreements were reached on the continuation of joint measures to increase the inflow to the Shardara reservoir, which is replenished from the Syrdarya river.

In addition, the parties discussed a draft agreement between the government of Kazakhstan and the government of Uzbekistan on the joint management and use of transboundary water bodies. Intentions were expressed to complete the procedures for agreeing on the draft agreement by the end of this year.

Earlier, an agreement was reached on the supply of an additional 330 million cubic meters of water from the Toktogul reservoir in Kyrgyzstan to the Syrdarya river from June through August.
