TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, November 15. Asian Development Bank (ADB) is considering allocation of grants to the Uzbek Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change for the development of waste management system in Uzbekistan, as well as improving the skills of employees of the ministry and subordinate organizations, Trend reports.
The issue was discussed during the meeting between Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov and Senior Director of the Water Resources and Urban Development Sector of the Asian Development Bank Norio Saito.
During the talks, the parties discussed topical issues such as integrated urban development and advanced training of employees in the field of ecology, as well as attracting companies in the field of waste processing from Japan to Uzbekistan.
Norio Saito proposed to start the 2nd phase of the Sustainable solid waste management project for the period from 2025 through 2026.
Meanwhile, a Memorandum of cooperation was signed between Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change and the Ministry of Ecology of Japan on December 23, 2022.
According to the memorandum, the parties will establish permanent cooperation in the field of climate change, water and air pollution, as well as waste management.
Currently, Uzbekistan accounts for 17 percent of the projects executed by the Asian Development Bank in the Central and Western Asian regions, securing the second position in the region based on this metric.
Moreover, Uzbekistan has entered into agreements with ADB for 25 projects totaling approximately $3.5 billion in as of 10 months of 2023.
