Mottaki: Iran's elections soundest in the world

Iran Materials 12 June 2009 12:30 (UTC +04:00)

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Friday cast his vote in the 10th Presidential Election and Experts Assembly by-elections, IRNA reported.
Iran holds one of the soundest and most creditable elections in the world, he said while casting his vote.

Foreign media try to question the soundness of elections in Iran in order to dissuade people from voting, he said. "All Iranian nationals are the real winners in these elections," he underlined.

Recommendations of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution along with peoples' rationality are the main reasons for the long queues at polling stations, Mottaki said.

It is not possible to predict the outcome of the elections as it is the peoples' vote which will determine the final results, he said.

Polling began nationwide at 08:00 hours local time (0330 GMT) Friday to elect the country's 10th president.

Four candidates, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Mir-Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Mohsen Rezaie, are running in the race for election as Iran's 10th president.
