Choosing Iran's government not UK's business - Foreign Secretary

Iran Materials 18 June 2009 01:36 (UTC +04:00)

Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband says his country will not take sides in the dispute over Iran's presidential elections, Press TV reported.

"It's for the Iranian people to choose their own government; the will of the people needs to come out," he told Channel 4 on Wednesday.

"We will say very clearly that we deplore the violence and especially the loss of life but we will not end up in a position where anyone can accuse the US or the UK or any Western power of trying to choose the Iranian government. That's not our job," the British diplomat added.

Tension in Iran began after the Interior Ministry declared incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the winner of the presidential elections.

Supporters of Mir-Hossein Mousavi, however, protested the results and called for the elections to be declared void.

Iran's foreign ministry has summoned some European countries' envoys to Tehran to protest against their countries 'malicious stance' towards Iran after the presidential election.

Ambassadors from Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Italy and France are among the foreign diplomats who have been summoned by Iran's Foreign Ministry.
