Iran's national volleyball squad has defeated the African champion Egypt in the Men's World Grand Champions Cup held in Japan.

Iran's national volleyball squad has defeated the African champion Egypt in the Men's World Grand Champions Cup held in Japan, Press TV reported.

Iran, runner-up to Japan in the Asian Championship, beat Egypt 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 15-10) in the first match of the event held at Osaka Municipal Central Gymnasium on Wednesday morning.

The Iranian side, coached by Hossein Maadani, is scheduled to meet Brazil in its second game of the event on Thursday.

Six top teams including Cuba, Poland, Egypt, Brazil, Iran and host Japan are participating in the event in the Japanese cities of Osaka and Nagoya.

In other Wednesday matches, Cuba will face Brazil while Japan will meet Poland.

The World Grand Champions Cup is an international men's and women's volleyball tournament, which was created in 1993 and is held the year after the Olympic Games.
