German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle expressed concern Wednesday over the case of an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, dpa reported

Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani a 43-year-old widow, was sentenced in 2006 following a conviction for alleged extramarital affairs. She was also accused of involvement in her husband's murder.

"I fear strongly for the life of Ms Ashtiani," Westerwelle said.

In the face of international pressure, Iranian authorities have suspended the stoning sentence, while denouncing what Tehran sees as foreign meddling in the internal affairs of their country.

"This is not a question of religion, but a question of elemental human dignity," Westerwelle said.

"Iran must respect human rights, particularly because it has committed itself to do so under international law."
