Parliament's Speaker: Iran seeks new roadmap for Iraq ties

Iran and Iraq can contribute to the development of the Islamic civilization, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said, calling for a new roadmap for relations between two countries, Press TV reported with reference to Parliament's news agency (ICANA).

Larijani made the remarks at a conference on Iran-Iraq historical and cultural relations in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Tuesday.

He pointed out that Iran and Iraq have deeply-rooted historical bonds and underlined the need for a new roadmap for cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad.

The top Iranian official described Iran and Iraq as two "significantly influential" countries and said the two countries' old civilizations could contribute to the development of a new Islamic civilization.

Referring to regional popular uprisings in the region, Larijani said regional developments have opened a new chapter in history and added, "Scientific and cultural bonds between regional countries are now of considerable significance because these bonds can lay the groundwork for the emergence of a new Islamic civilization."

Iran and Iraq are trying to further develop ties following the fall of Iraq's executed dictator Saddam Hussein.

Relations between the two countries are growing day by day and the Iranian and Iraqi authorities' visits of the countries' capitals serve as clear examples of strong ties.
