Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has presented to Majlis (parliament) the Ashgabat five-party agreement on the construction of a regional transit corridor.

The agreement was proposed by Iran's Ministry of Road and Transportation with the aim of facilitating the transit of goods and passengers between regional countries and elevating Iran's transit status in the region, IRNA reported.

The deal envisions the establishment of a transit corridor running through Iran, Oman, Qatar, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, which would connect central Asia to the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi had in his visit to Ashgabat in April asserted that the five-party agreement offered a promising prospect for economic and transit cooperation as well as a bright future for regional development, welfare and stability.
