Iran felicitates Muslims on Eid al-Adha

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has congratulated all the Muslims of the world on the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice, Press TV reported.

Ahmadinejad said on Sunday that Eid al-Adha is one of the biggest feasts of the Muslim world, IRNA reported.

The Iranian president stated that Eid al-Adha is the time when a Muslim tries to separate from himself and unite with God.

Ahmadinejad also wrote a letter to Organization of Islamic Cooperation Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu to extend his congratulations on the occasion.

He expressed hope that closer cooperation among Muslim countries would help the Muslim world come closer to reaching the goal of establishing lasting justice, peace, and welfare.

"I pray that God enables the Muslims of the world to achieve more success," Ahmadinejad said.

In addition, Iranian First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi congratulated Muslim nations and governments on the occasion of Eid al-Adha in a message to his counterparts in Muslim countries, in which he expressed hope that members of the Muslim ummah would strengthen their unity.

More than 2.5 million Muslims have gathered in the desert of Mena near the holy city of Mecca to mark Eid al-Adha.

The day is the peak of the Hajj, during which pilgrims slaughter sheep and cattle and have their heads shaved.

The five-day ceremony is meant to symbolize the essential concepts of the Islamic faith.
