Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar says over one thousand individuals have registered to be candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections, Press TV reported.

Mohammad-Najjar announced on Monday that 1020 individuals had filed the documents by noon of the third day of registration.

Registration for the ninth Majlis elections, which are scheduled to be held on March 2, 2012, began with an opening ceremony attended by the interior minister and several other senior Iranian officials in Tehran on Saturday.

Candidates for the next Majlis elections have until December 30, 2011 to register, and officials have announced that the deadline will most probably not be extended.

The Guardian Council, which is tasked with supervising the election, will then evaluate the competence of the people who have registered.

The principlist bloc won a majority of seats in the 275-seat legislature in the last parliamentary elections in Iran, which were held in 2008.
