EU, US sanctions threaten global energy security: IRI FM spokesman

Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast, said that the US and the European Union have threatened the energy security and balance of the world energy markets by imposing the new sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran's economy, IRNA reported.

Mehmanparast made the remarks on Sunday in reaction to the new round of sanctions imposed by the EU on Islamic republic of Iran.

"They (the West) should be accountable to the negative effects on the world economy resulting from their irresponsible measures (imposing sanctions). This is due to the fact that the security of supply is an inseparable part of security of global energy market," he added.

Mehmanparast said that the unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and the EU lacks legitimacy and contradicts international regulations, including free trade principles.

"The US and EU should b e awaiting confronting problems such as intensified financial and economic problems, as well as further social protests. These are in addition to political and diplomatic consequences of sanctions," he said.

Mehmanparast noted that by imposing sanctions, the West showed that they not only do not pursue constructive approach vis-à-vis Iran, but also their unconstructive approach is at a time while during talks between Iran and Group 5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany), the two sides emphasized mutual trust.

He once again said that IR Iran believes in the motto "Nuclear weapon for none, peaceful nuclear energy for everyone."

"IR Iran will defend this approach in all international organizations and meetings while being determined to get achieve its nuclear tights," Mehmanparast said. He pointed out that the people of Iran not only do not bow to pressures, the sanctions have even made the people to become more united and determined to maintain self-sufficiency.
