The key to resolving Syrian crisis remains in U.S. and Russia, Senior fellow at Nanyang Technological University's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, James M. Dorsey told Trend.
Speaking on the ongoing Syrian protests, Dorsey said the question is whether anyone holds the key or whether Syria is a desperate struggle for survival till the end.
"At the end of the day, power lies with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council," he said.
Armed conflict in Syria has been going on for over a year and a half already. According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 20,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
Dorsey noted that in order to get closer to the solution, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have to reach consensus.
"The main focus lies on the U.S. and Russia. If they agree, others will follow," the expert noted.
Meanwhile, speaking of Iran's part in resolving the Syrian crisis, Dorsey said that Iran has pushed for a political solution to the issue, and has failed.
During yesterday's meeting with his counterparts from Turkey and Egypt, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has proposed a road map for resolving Syrian crisis.
Despite this, Dorsey said the key to solution of the crisis lies in a different place.
"The key remains in New York at the UN, not in the region," he underscored.
