Former MP views Khatami as a proper presidential candidate in Iran

Former reformist parliamentarian Akbar A'lami views Mohammad Khatami as a proper choice for presidential nomination by reformists in 2013 election, Mehr News reported. Khatami was president from 1997 to 2005, for two consecutive terms.

Iran's next presidential election will be held on June 14, 2013.

A'lami says in regard to the record of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's administration if Khatami runs for presidency again and there would be no leading and capable candidate among the presidential contenders the people will vote for Khatami for a third time.

He also said he does not consider former vice president Mohammad Reza Aref and former labor minister Hossein Kamali as reformists.

That a person is considered as reformist is because of his "record" and his "stances" but according to "my definition of reforms and reformist none of these Messrs Aref and Kamali are considered reformist."

However he said Khatami failed to do great reforms as president despite the fact that he enjoyed the backing of 22 million voters, a reformist parliament, university students, and media outlets.
