The Russian president's Special Representative for the Middle East and Russia, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov received Iran's Ambassador to Moscow Mahmoud Reza Sajjadi at his request on February 8, the ministry said today.

The sides have exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East and North Africa, with emphasis on the need for a rapid political settlement of the Syrian crisis.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for more than a year and half. According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 60,000. More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
