Iran has stopped expanding its uranium enrichment facilities and work on a controversial new reactor has progressed only slowly in the past months, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a report issued Thursday, dpa reported.
At the same time, the Vienna-based agency noted that Iran has continued to produce enriched uranium in defiance of resolutions of the UN Security Council, which is concerned that the material could be used for nuclear weapons.
The report was the first since August, when Iranian President Hassan Rowhani took office, vowing to quickly end the stand-off over his country's nuclear programme in order to get sanctions lifted.
The report, which was obtained by dpa, said only a handful of additional centrifuges for enriching uranium were installed at the Natanz enrichment plant.
No new ones were installed at the Fordo plant, the report said.
At the construction site of the plutonium-producing Arak reactor, the reactor core had been connected to the cooling system, but no other major components have been recently added.
The report came after the IAEA signed a deal with Iran on Monday that will give nuclear inspectors access to additional civilian nuclear sites, while postponing an investigation into alleged nuclear weapons research and development projects.
