The first stage of operation of the transport zone in southern Tehran has started working, Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Mohammad Eslami said, Trend reports via IRNA.

Based on the plans, the transport zone is planned to operate with 320 transport companies, while at the first stage, 70 companies are in operation.

The transport zone is finished by 45 percent, while some $715 million has been invested in its development.

The set up of the transport zone looks to eliminate certain traffic and transportation issues in Tehran, such as: establishing close links between drivers and shipping companies, reducing pollution levels, caused by vehicle traffic in the city, preventing storage of factory shipments and reducing costs of warehousing and freight rates.

The full completion of the zone will allow to gradually remove barges and garabes from Tehran, with aim to turn the freed spots into cultural and tourism centers.
