With the continued rainfall in Iran, Lake Urmia will reach its ecological balance in 2027, said Isa Kalantari, Iranian Vice President and Chairman of the Environmental Protection Organization, after visiting Lake Urmia, Trend reports referring to IRNA.
According to Kalantari, when compared to the same period last year (started March 21, 2018), the water balance in Urmia Lake increased by 36 cm as a result of recent precipitation.
Kalantari added that with the water from the Little Zab River being transported to Lake Urmia, the volume of water coming from the river to the lake annually will reach a level of 650 million cubic meters by the end of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2019).
"With the transportation of about 300 million cubic meters of water to Lake Urmia by the Iranian Ministry of Energy, as well as by the water and sewage companies of the region, the annual volume of water coming into the lake by the beginning of next year (begins March 21, 2020) will reach about 1 billion cubic meters," he said.
Kalantari added that Iran had about 80 billion cubic meters of precipitation, which has ended up saving the country from drought for about 11 years.
