Iran eyes water right agreement with neighboring countries

TEHRAN, Iran, Sep.13

Trend:

Iran's policy in border waters should be to emphasize protecting water rights of rivers, said the professor of the Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Trend reports citing ILNA.

If Iran can convince other regional countries such as Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan to sign an agreement to prevent water tension would create profitable ties between regional countries, Mehdi Ghomeyshi has indicated.

He noted that Iran's inlet water from Tigris and Euphrates river had declined 30 percent, while the country's inlet waters are not a serious challenge and about 5 to 6 billion cubic meters water outlet from Iran's border river and between 13 billion cubic meters enter to rivers in the country.

In the north of the country, there is not much of a problem with Iran–Turkmenistan Friendship Dam and rationing are compiled in Aras and Harirroud rivers.

Ghomeyshi added that Iran's policy is not to prevent the water outflow from rivers that connect to border rivers, except for Afghanistan that needs to comply with water rights and the water supply is needed in Iran for agriculture in the border region, Iran had not signed any new contract about water right with Afghanistan since 1972.

Iran has 28 border rivers and the most important ones are Arvand, Aras, Atrak, Hirmand, and Harirroud, the water inlet via joint rivers to Iran is about 13 billion cubic meters.
